New Wild Cards Limited Series

Dabel Bros. Productions is producing a new limited comic book series based in George R. R. Martin’s Wild Cards universe of super-powered heroes & villains. Newsarama is showing off 5 preview pages and a cover today and I’m already excited about this. For those not in the know, Wild Cards cycle was originally a series of shared universe short stories & novellas written by a variety of authors with Martin as the overseeing editor. In this universe during World War II an alien virus that mutated a large section of the populous. “Aces” were people who attained super powers from the virus, while “Jokers” were disfigured, often severely by virus. A new series of collected stories is also being published by Tor Books this year. Wikipedia has a good entry on the series for those wanting more background.

As much as I like the books, I’ve waited so long for a top shelf vision of this universe to be brought to a comic book format. With its superhero sci-fi subject matter, the stories and characters are a natural for a comic book. An graphic novel adaptation of the original books was produced by Marvel’s Epic comic line many moons ago and it was okay.  The few pages seen on Newsarama looked pretty good, so I’m hopeful. I highly recommend the original series of books for anyone looking for something new. Martina and his Wild Card collaborators have created a rich alternate universe with great characters.
